Resilient Leadership - Creating Confident Control In All Situations

Resilient leadership combined with emotionally intelligent and capable management is foundational for predictable business growth and development.

There are many additional factors that are fundamental to business success…..

  • From how well marketing and sales strategies speak to the needs and benefits of customers and prospects.
  • How prudent financial management is in controlling overheads and cashflow, along with investing in plant and new technologies.
  • How well we systemise, optimise and control our operational efficiencies!

And in my mind the most important..., the Human Resource! How well we lead, manage and motivate the right people to do the right things in the right way at the right time, all the time!

Fostering A Supportive Culture

We have long known that fostering a supportive culture enhances motivation, innovation and ultimately productivity. Employee development and engagement are also crucial for retention and overall efficiency and performance.

Teaching effective (internal and external - for self and others) communication tools and techniques to support senior management and creating a culture of resilient leadership should be a top priority. Teaching your key people how to handle pressure effectively and how to maintain personal mental well-being is vitally important to the stability and growth of everyone within the organisation.

Training these same leaders with the right observation and awareness skills, along with advanced communication skills will ensure that they are fully engaged and attuned with their team’s mental health, well being and ultimate motivation and performance. This will help create predictability for the overall growth and evolution of the business. Empowering staff to consistently deliver the very best product and service, that the market requires and indeed these days more than likely demands.

So how do we go about ensuring that our leaders and senior management teams have all of the right skills and confidence to stay in control and always empowered to guide, lead and stimulate the very best in their people?

Here are 5 important strategies that when implemented can very much help nurture resilient leadership…..

1. Resilient Leadership Training and Education

Coaching Training: Learning how to recognise, guide and influence yourself and others beyond negative emotional associations and limitations. Developing the linguistic tools to easily break through negativity to consistently stimulate positive resourceful states and thinking.

Resilience Training: Teaching skills that enhance resilience, such as stress management, adaptive thinking, and emotional intelligence. How to recognise when to stand back and gain perspective and how to reset before moving forward.

Mental Health Awareness: A leader must have an understanding of mental health fundamentals. They should be able to recognise early enough the signs of stress and burnout in themselves and others. The emotional stability and overall mental well-being of our human resource, has a massive impact on effective decision making, development of options, strategies, innovation and motivation.

2. Implementing Effective Support Systems

Experienced Mentorship and Leadership Coaching: Provide access to experienced and relevant mentors or highly skilled coaches who specialise in leadership, resilience, and wellness. Highly trained leadership coaching professionals can develop personalised advice, strategies and long term coaching programs specifically designed to target individual or complex cross contextual problems and challenges.

Peer Networks: Create regular networking events and or master mind groups, where relevant leaders can share experiences and strategies for resolving challenges. Along with well proven and effective ways of reducing stress and pressure. This is also a great way of preempting and resolving the known negative effects of overwhelm and isolation.

3. Fostering a Supportive Culture

Encourage Safe And Open Communication: An open door policy only works if people are willing to step through it! Promoting an organisational culture where the entire teams mental health is respected, important and openly discussed. This can easily be achieved by being willing to go first! With the right levels of connection and rapport with the team, leaders will gain a huge amount of traction if they are willing to share their own highly relevant challenging experiences along with the successful strategies they have used and are using to effectively managing their own stress and pressure.

Mental Health And Well-being Strategy Training Programs: Have your internal or external staff development team, design effective and proven mental health and well-being training and coaching programs. It is far more cost effective to pay for program development and training that helps to retain staff, than to pay for recruitment to replace them. We have no right to break our people! These programs could include proven content and activities like mindfulness sessions, the training of emotional resolution models, learning state and focus control, time management and prioritisation training and even nutrition and fitness advice.

4. Process and Policy Support

Flexible Working Policies And Practices: Make sure that you have policies and processes in place that allow for (when and where required) flexible working hours and remote work options to fully support leaders and managers to manage their personal and professional work life balance in a more effective and thus productive way. As a leader there are certain requirements of the job that will always deliver far more productive and inspiring results, off site, without interruptions.

Accurately And Honestly Assess The Internal And External Feedback: Actively measuring and assessing the effectiveness of all mental health and well-being policies and programs is incredibly important. It has to be seen to be real! Equally as important is having the skills and flexibility to adapt and adjust when required. We are emotional beings! The performance of yourself and your people can and will have many factors, some predictable and some seemingly random, all of which have the potential to create a negative and sometimes debilitating impact. Training and developing heightened sensory awareness is key to engineering in more predictability and control.

5. Advanced Communication Tools and Technologies

What’s Real? What’s Not?: Our naturally evolved internal and external communication skills are truly amazing, yet flawed, and during times of stress and peak emotional stimulation, not to be trusted at all. Because of the true nature of reality, our neurology is designed to delete, distort and generalise the overwhelming amount of data that makes up reality. We dumb it down to the bite size chunk levels that we can coupe with, this becomes our perceived reality. The big question is what data are we left with and how accurate is it and more importantly, how helpful is it? We unconsciously tend to process what we are familiar with and what we have an internal referential index for. It is very difficult for new experiences to be totally new! This is because our neurology for the most part, is under pressure to quickly assess and understand (sometimes to quickly!) what is happening! Thus requires us to put it into an already existing inbox. We think we know before actually knowing! This can badly effect our perception of an experience and therefore our options. Dependable, capable and resilient leadership requires us to have the most accurate, positive and helpful grasp of the ‘true’ current reality.

Advanced Listening Skills: People use words in a highly ambiguous way, they don’t know that they are missing out a huge amount of the required detail. The problem with this is, that most listeners don’t notice either. The words the speaker is using are a highly chunked up (and when emotionally stimulated, hugely exaggerated) externalised representation of the pictures they are running in their own head. The listener is stimulated to see ‘their own’ version of these pictures in their head. The flaw in this is, because the detail is missing the two pictures are going to be wildly different. This can also install unhelpful beliefs and misconceptions that are not supported by fact. Our leaders and our managers must be taught to listen better and to ask highly relevant questions that will uncover the deleted material that is vitally important and contextually required if we want to find an effective solution. This skill brings with it a huge amount of confidence and control over the effectiveness of all communication.

Advanced Speaking Skills: We are looking for the YES! There is a huge influential power to be leveraged from unconscious agreement. Leaders should be taught how to gain the yes and how to maintain the yes. This is like inception! If we can create a positive picture of a desired outcome in the head of the listener that they believe to be true, they then, will be unconsciously motivated and compelled to ensure that it is. This creates a powerful unconscious alignment between their beliefs, their focus, their actions and their results. Now that’s effective and indeed resilient leadership!
