Now the big question is..., should a manager know how to lead and should a leader know how to manage?
It could be viewed that a manager without leadership skills is more of a scheduler of time, people and resources. And a leader without management skills is more of a conceptual ideal and figure head.
We maybe are spending a bit to much time focusing on the noun, the word 'Leader' as one person. The departmental leader or the overall leader of a contextual group or collective organisation.
In our 'Leadership' coaching and training programs we focus on it being what it truly is, which is a 'verb'. There can be only one contextual leader within an organisation, yet there can be limitless amounts of leadership.
Leadership therefore is a process, a mindset, attitude and state, that creates and drives effective and consistent behaviours that predictably influence the actions of others.
I would sooner have a business that was full of managers that can lead, than I would a business full of leaders who can't manage.
A truly great leader will be able to intuitively judge when to lead and when to follow, when to be authoritative and when to be permissive, when to speak and when to listen. They will have the courage of an adventurer, the logic of a scientist, the vision of an artist and the words of a poet.
All are skills that can be studied, modelled, assimilated and utilised. The quickest way to learn them is through self mastery and the mastery of influence, language and effective communication.
Leadership is all about knowing how and when to stimulate, agitate and compound.
